"There are an estimated 325,000 Asian Pacific Islander (API) adults in the United States that identify as LGBT. Unfortunately, in the API community, young people often see coming out as an act of shaming and dishonoring their parents and their ancestors, but staying in the closet takes a greater toll, causing isolation, depression, and even suicide. Our call to action? Let’s encourage API parents to offer their LGBTQ child a lifeline, support their coming out, and keep the family strong and unified."

The Dari Project

The Dari Project began in 2006 and is a volunteer-led organization that develops resources for increasing LGBTQ awareness and acceptance in the Korean-American community through a collection of life stories of LGBTQ Koreans.

"The name, Dari. means both 'bridge' and 'legs' in Korean, and symbolizes our wish to build ties within and among our communities."

Koreans United for Equality

Picture
kue-la.org
The young men and women of Koreans United for Equality (KUE) actively recruit attendees to our Afternoon Tea with Asian Parents (ATAP) for our Korean families with LGBTQ children.  SGV API PFLAG parent activists,  John and Minsook Brady, collaborate with KUE members to reach out to families.

KUE was borne out of a response to Proposition 8 that eliminated marriage equality in California in 2008.  With a heartbreaking realization that over 70% of Korean-American voters said "Yes on Prop 8", the organization was founded to increase the visibility of Korean and Korean-American LGBTIQ through resources, news, media campaigns, and safe spaces to discuss issues of family acceptance and societal stereotypes of the LGBTIQ.

Queer Koreans Alliance
Picturequeerkoreans.org
The Queer Koreans Alliance is a group of organizations devoted to supporting lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender, and queer people (LGBTQ) in Korea and Korean American communities.  Due to the conservative nature of Korean culture, especially within Christian circles, many LGBTQ have felt excluded and alone, often finding themselves depressed, some to the point of suicide.

To counteract these negative forces, a bilingual website will be developed to  provide readings on key topics, especially on the issue of Christianity and sexuality, and a list of allies, organizations, and resources.
