CONTACTS FOR LANGUAGE SUPPORT & LGBTQ GROUP
Picture
Marsha Aizumi
Parent - Transgender - English
Marsha is an educator and advocate for the LGBT community; a cause she embraced due in large part to the harassment and bullying her transgender son experienced throughout high school.  She is currently serving on the PFLAG National Board of Directors.  In this role, she hopes to change school culture to be more accepting of all students, as well as bring greater resources and support to the Asian Pacific Islander and transgender communities.  Marsha is the author of a memoir, Two Spirits, One Heart. Written with her transgender son, Marsha chronicles a mother's personal journey from fear, uncertainty, and sadness to unconditional love, acceptance, and support of her child.

John & Minsook Brady
Parent - Korean & English
Minsook & John are Korean-American parents of a daughter and a gay son.  Minsook is a retired nurse and a grandmother! John & Minsook refer to themselves as "PFLAG addicts"; meaning that, outside of grandparenting, their lives revolve around attending SGV API PFLAG and Long Beach PFLAG meetings.  Minsook and John coordinate and facilitate the Korean Afternoon Tea.

Harold and Ellen Kameya
Parent - English
Harold is a retired engineer and his wife, Ellen, is a retired elementary school teacher.  Their extended family is from Hawaii, but both are U.S.-born Japanese-Americans.  They are parents of four children and actively-involved grandparents. The Kameyas began their journey in the LGBT movement when their daughter came out.  A deeply spiritual couple and active members of their Christian community, the Kameyas initially sought information and support from LA-PFLAG.  This was in the late 1980s, when there was still very little voice from the API LGBT community, much less among families with LGBT children.  They soon realized that there was a great need for support as parents and for API LGBT individuals.  By 2009, Harold formed a satellite program known as API PFLAG LA. with the help of GAPSN (Gay Asian Pacific Support Network).  Meanwhile, Harold and Ellen continued an additional visibility campaign and activist work through several documentaries involving educating faith communities, finding progressive Christian churches, and continuing their involvement with the Japanese American Citizens' League (JACL).  Since 2014, Harold also serves as president of the JACL- San Fernando Valley chapter.

Jessica Lee
Contact for Youth - Mandarin & English
Jessica grew up in Arcadia and identifies as a 2nd generation gay Taiwanese American. Conversationally fluent but barely literate in Mandarin Chinese, she has been out since 2010 and loves her parents unconditionally, in spite of their reservations about her sexual orientation. She hopes to help bridge the gap of understanding between the perspectives of API parents and their LGBTQ children through PFLAG. Jessica has a Psychology degree from UC Irvine and is currently pursuing her teaching credential in math at CSUF where she dreams of creating safe, empowering spaces in education. She enjoys playing tennis, hiking, watching an unhealthy amount of television, and volunteering for youth in the community. As she figures out how to adult, Jessica looks forward to rescuing a dog.

Carol Mannion
Parent - Tagalog / Filipino & English
Carol is a Filipina-American mother of two sons.  She and her husband, Bill, both retired, have worked previously in public service. She has a B.S. in Psychology and M.A. in Education, and a Multiple Subjects CA teaching credential.  Carol speaks conversational Tagalog.  She has been involved with SGV API PFLAG since May 2012, as lead facilitator, webmaster, communications coordinator, event organizer, outreach, budget, grant application, etc....  This organization began as a satellite program of PFLAG Pasadena in April 2012.  Committed to increasing its visibility and accessibility, Carol applied for its own nonprofit status, as a 501(c)(3). In May of 2013, SGV API PFLAG became the very first API PFLAG chartered chapter in the nation. Carol served also as the organization's first chapter president.
"As a proud mother of a gay son, I wanted to provide a Filipino and Asian mom's voice of support, through conversations with other parents who are in the beginning stages of their journey to acknowledgment of their child's sexual orientation or gender identity, and to show the LGBT young adults that there are parents like me, who unconditionally love and embrace our children for who they are.....and in so doing, together, we will bring about awareness, understanding, and equality for all..."
