"I Am"  Screening and Panel Discussion
August 2012

API Equality LA, Satrang, and the South Asian Network organized a free documentary screening of "I Am" by Sonali Gulati.  Sonali relates her story about returning to India when her mother died.  As she sorts through her childhood home, she tells her story about the long-held public perception of South Asian LGBTs in India.  A panel discussion followed, which included a mother and her gay son.  (August 2012)

Diamond Bar United Church of Christ
September 2012

When a faith community is "open and affirming", it means that its congregation comprised of people who come from different backgrounds; whether by ethnicity, prior spiritual practice, all levels of socio-economic status, and/ or sexual orientation.  From the moment I invited myself to attend their worship, they welcomed me with open arms.  Rev. Jeanne, an ally, took the time to listen to me, an Asian parent searching for a spiritual community who did not judge or condemn my son's sexual orientation.  She also shared with me and encouraged me that there also existed a Catholic support group for parents of LGBT.  Pictured below are some members of DB-UCC during a Summer BBQ. They're straight; they're retirees; some are young and older Asian families; some LGBT; some with disability.  All volunteer in whatever capacity to help local communities in need. (September 2012)

Archdiocese of Los Angeles:
San Gabriel Regional Catholic Conference
October 2012

The Ministry with Lesbian and Gay Catholics comprised of parents of LGBT and LGBT individuals within the Roman Catholic church in the Archdiocese of L.A. presented a workshop for Catholic clergy, parochial school teachers, and parishioners, on acceptance of LGBT individuals.

A Visit from our API-PFLAG NYC Lead
November 2012

Clara Yoon, NYC PFLAG Korean-American parent, visited us in November 2012.  Clara Yoon and her husband are proud parents of a transgender son.  She is currently working on launching the API Family Support group within PFLAG in NYC.   She has served on the Board of the NYC PFLAG chapter since September 2012, and is an active member of the TransParent Project.   Clara is currently looking to make connections to other LGBTQ organizations, LGBTQ friendly religious leaders, educators and local/national API communities to gain their support, to identify resources and to spread the word about their API Family Support group. (November 2012)
