ABOUT US
Welcome to our PFLAG- San Gabriel Valley Asian Pacific Islander website. We are grateful that you have made the time to view our website.
We hope that you will benefit by:
The SGV API PFLAG is a support group for Asian-Pacific Islander (API) gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgenders (LGBT), as well as for their parents, families, and friends. The group began meeting in April 2012 as a satellite program of PFLAG- Pasadena. In May 2013, we became our own chartered chapter; the first independent API PFLAG chapter in the nation.
Meetings are held from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm every fourth Sunday of every month in a venue located centrally in the San Gabriel Valley area of Southern California, in the city of Alhambra.
Afternoon Tea with Asian Parents (ATAP)
ATAP is arranged on a need-basis for those parents of LGBT, their families, and their children, who would like more private and smaller group dialogue with others of similar culture, language, or dialect. Attendees chat informally and ask questions, while sharing their journey of acceptance. Flexibility with meeting place and group size are considered. The ATAP is generally culture-specific, where language assistance can be arranged.
Family Circles
The Family Circle format is a smaller gathering among other family members who may need to gain familiarity and understanding about sexual orientation, gender identity, as it relates to self, your child, sibling, or friend. This is not a therapy session, but a facilitated conversation where parents who have made their journey successfully, share their experiences with other parents and family members in a one-on-one format. When requested, interpreters are made available to translate. The Family Circle is exclusive to the requestor's immediate family and/or extended family. As with ATAP, we try to provide flexibility with meeting place.
Online Resources
We have provided some online resources for you to access. This is an ongoing effort that will be regularly updated. Your feedback, as well as additional literature you may have that you wish to share with our online community, are very much welcomed and will be appreciated. Please feel free to contact us.
We hope that you will benefit by:
- increasing your awareness of other LGBTQ Asian-Americans, Pacific-Islanders, and South Asian organizations on a local, statewide, and national level
- gaining access to online resources we have gathered and using the services we offer
- finding a place where you and your family can dialogue in the comfort of safe spaces that understand your culture, language, and/or faith
- interacting with an accepting and gentle group of folks who have been through similar journeys of coming out, acceptance, and acculturation.
